Okay, now that my other fence question has been answered, I'm wanting to know what types of fence are good to contain calves. This would be a smaller "starter" or "training" area inside of my other fence.

Do I need to worry about calves getting out of my main fence which is 3 strand high tensile with the bottom 4th strand being electric 17 guage wire that is 1 1/2 feet offf the ground? Usually the horse foals would bounce off the high tensile once and I could consider them trained. Are calves the same?

Thanks again,
Amy

With calves it seems to take twice, but the same idea works. Don't understand the "This would be a smaller "starter" or "training" area inside of my other fence" deal

Sorry for the lack of clarity.

I have been told that I need a wooden fence with a few strands of electric to turn calves out in until they get shocked a few times and they learn to stay in the fence. Is this true or is the fencing I have adequate?

Our calves just run with the cows behind a single strand of 12 1/2 gauge high tensile electric. As little squirts they'll walk under it until it hits them on the back a couple of times, then they stay in just fine. We also have a couple of pasture of 3 strand barbed, never have had the calves go through that either. You may be making things harder then they need to be

Sounds like I am. I think I'll go the easy and cheap electric route and let'em learn to stay in by getting a good shock.

Thanks Dun.
