Monday night about 11pm I hear my doorbell ring. On my porch is a guy w/ his girlfriend. He said he tried to dodge a deer and hit my fence. The wrecker service refused to move his truck until he talked to me because it was wrapped around the telephone pole butt end in 3ft of concrete. He at first said that he had no insurance but would pay for any damages. I saw that he was from Alabama and I figured that I would never see him again after he got his truck so I felt it best to call the police for an accident report. He didn't want me to but he didn't have a choice. While we were waiting for the police I smelled alcohol on his breath. He then proceeded to take a case of beer out of the back of the truck and a small cooler of beer out of the front seat and transfer it to his girlfriends SUV. His girlfriend then left. I also would not let the tow truck guy move the truck because the truck was the only thing blocking the big hole created in the fence and my nosey cows were standing around checking everything out. Deputy came out and filed a report and I kept waiting on him to do a sobriety check but he never did. I told him about the beer but he said he couldn't do anything due to there being no evidence at the scene (beer bottles etc.). I told him about the girlfriend taking everything but he didn't seem interested. When the police showed up the driver then miraculously produced insurance cards which he supposedly didn't have when he said that he would pay. This made me mad so I upped the estimate on fence repair cost by another 500.00 over what I figured it would cost. I have to file a claim with his insurance.
The story about a deer is BS. The place he went off the road was a hairpin curve to the left and my fence is right in front of the curve. He was just going to fast and went right off the road. His skid marks on the pavement were about 90 feet long and in a straight line. He must have been flying because his truck was totaled. I spent most of the night repairing the fence temporarily to keep the cows in and picking up debris in the pasture to prevent hardware disease.
He damaged about 250 ft of woven wire fence as well as knocking the two telephone butt cuts loose in their concrete holes. He actually punched a hole through the woven wire fence and the wire was tangled all around his truck and underneath it. I guess the reflectors that I put on all the posts in that curve didn't help him
