Like many, I listen everyday. It was particularly disappointing today (for our future). Seems like everything is out to get us. I was planning on weaning my fall calvers in march, and selling their mothers. I believe I'll send the calves down the road at the same time, instead of backgrounding them.

A couple years of solid contraction amongst producer numbers would change a lot. If demand is still stable all this time but prices are headed the other way, tells you supply is still too ample. Still too many people out there that add to the calf supply with subsidized cattle that want the lifestyle, but are depressing it for those of us that have it as a livelihood. Locally a few of those people are getting out as their $20 loss they begrudgingly took per head year after year has gradually increased to $100 per head and is eating into their pension funds.

Good points. I've got my feeling that they'd just import to off set. Has happened or will happen to almost aspect of industry.

Imports can be controlled. Forcing people to consume more, mandating higher prices and obtaining new export markets of considerable size is beyond control for industry lobbying.

What lacks is the will to curtail imports when supply is already ample. Particularly when the imports likely don't meet the food safety standards set in North America.
