Feeder calf breed and genetics

When purchasing Feeder Calves, how do you know the breed assuming they are not pure? Genetics would say so much regarding end result in size and frame, not to mention health. Unless you are purchasing from someone you know, do you simply review the calves stature and make assumptions based onwhat you see or ask the seller for information regarding the sire and dam and history of breeding?

With experience you can pretty much tell at least some of what breeding a calf has. Condition, frame and size are the things that will clue you in. It's all part of the tuition of learning the business.
