A man was renting seed drill asked how much ky31 he should plant on a new stand and how much to overseed in a existing pasture. There was 5 of us in there and had 5 different answers. My answer was 10 lbs acre to overseed and 25 for a new stand. Those who deal with KY31 what say you on the seeding rate?

I e never drilled it but I find when broadcasting I get the best stands when I sow it heavy. I sowed 50-60lbs acre this spring in a couple spots and it has came in great.
Fall planting you could probably get by with less.

I also broadcast and plant in the fall and heavy but with it being 80.00 a bag any new stands I plant I will drill 80.00 + an acre plus some clover can get expensive real quick if doing a sizable parcel

Most College extension say 15 lb in pure stands and 8-12 with clovers added. 4-8 lb clover.

What does Kenny Thomas say?

I agree. The soil is going to support only so many plants. Even in forestry mother nature will thin the trees over time. It may not show but it happens in grass also.
In sod graze it as close as possible and frost seed 8-10 lb in the winter. Adding 2 lb of clover helps also.

I drilled at 25#/acre fall of 2017, JD 1960's drill set on 7" coulter spacing. This spring I cut it and had a stellar crop....with all the things you need for growth applied, but in reasonable quantities on the fert. but had lots of rain.

Tell you how good it was, I couldn't rake it into WWs initially; too thick. I scattered it with the tedder and came behind the tedder and baled scattered clippings and made the best bales I ever baled with my current Jd 375 roller. Once I made a few passes through the field to thin things out I got out the rake and raked up WWs and finished baling.

The other neat thing was that it was still raining in May when I baled but by some nook or crook, I got about a week of clear weather with good sun shine and low humidity with good North winds. I was fretting (and posted herein) on worrying about losing the crop. Didn't happen. You just never know!

I've drilled at 25 and 50 lb rates with the same rate of wheat for a cover. Really couldn't tell a difference between the two.

I think wheat really helps you get a good stand. Anytime I sow fescue in the late summer or fall it has about 20-25lbs/acre of wheat with it.
