feed mountain

I had a load of feed delivered to the bin today. The idiot driver didn't close or chain the gate leading to the bin and my calves got in by the bin. One of them must have licked the "on" button for the auger... so by the time I get to the farm to feed, I find a mountain of feed (10 tons)and all 70 of the calves I'm feeding are having a party... what a freaking mess! I sacked off every sack I could find in the dark. Its supposed to rain tonight so I covered the feed with some tarps. I'm going to try to scoop up as much as I can salvage with the tractor. I got a hold of the feed salesman and after I screamed at him for a while, he assured me that I'd be credited for the feed. I asked if I'll also be credited for the value of any calves that have foundered..he'll check on that..

I think I'll go out and check the calves later tonight any advice on what I should be looking for for foundered calves? Is there any preventive steps that I should take? The feed is a complete corn gluten based feed with rumensin added. I've been feeding them a daily ration of 8#'s per head. They were all up and none seemed sick whenever I left.

Really bad luck. M thoughts are that if they have been eating their fill before they probably wont founder this time. Definately keep an eye on them though.

I'm with Kenny on this they should be fine. I would worry if they had not been eating this feed then they would over eat .

They've got free choice hay. Wife said that she bet that their eyes really lit up when they heard that auger kick on..early Xmas for them I guess..

i think they'll most likely be fine. any reputable feed company I've dealt with carried insurance to cover losses that were directly caused by the their errors or the negligence of their employees. I'm sure screaming at the feed salesman who was trying to make the drivers mistake right was very productive and rewarding.

Does that auger have a shut off handle for power? Yea I bet those calves were like " yeeha! "
The on/off is a light switch that I wired in. I'm going to start unplugging the switch when I'm not using it.

How are they doing today?
They all seemed good early this AM. Hopefully I'm in the clear.. I'm going to go and get about 60 more sacks and bag up all that I can today

I read a good article on foundering in horses, they said when the hooves are kept cold it helped prevent it as well, so if you have cold weather that might naturally help them.

Hope they do fine

That is not funny but then it is to think all the calves cheering on the one that cut the auger on. I wish you would have taken pics.

I'd be out looking to skin that driver.
A calf that can turn the switch on to the auger might be able to unlock a gate as well.

Heckfire, he might even be trained to drive the truck and pull the trailer to haul his buddies to the sale barn.

Truth is nobody really knows what happened. Seen the same thing happen before caused by nothing more than excess moisture in switch that turned on the auger, unless of course an unseen calf turned it on.

Its actually a snap latch so unless the calf has developed thumbs I'm pretty sure it is the sorry drivers fault

But unless he realizes and admits he left it open there is no way you can prove it regardless of all the screaming and cussing. Sometimes things just happen. Last week a squirrel surfaced inside my mother in law's commode in the bathroom....good thing the lid was down.
