I took the 4.5 and 2 yr. old fishing this afternoon to one of my mentor's Angus farms that is bordered by a nice small river. As we were going in I thought I'd do something nice and stop by the working facilities and cut some long overdue bushes and limbs that were impeding the working area and loading area. Pulled the truck up and put the kids in the back in some chairs, they were watching all the cows come see if we had something to eat and me cutting limbs and bushes. All was going well until I started moving all the limbs to an area where unknown to me was a Bumblebee nest! I discovered it was there when I stepped right in the middle of it and they went crazy and stung me 5 times! Now the funny and fortunate part was my two little ones sitting there watching me run down the dirt road ripping my shirt off while being stung repeatedly. The fortunate part was they were in the back of the truck only about 15 feet from the nest I stepped on and the bees never touched them, God did indeed protect them. The story doesn't end there. After figuring out I wasn't going to die I and getting the truck away from the nest I said let's go fishing, my two little ones were excited to go fishing and still asking why daddy was running down the road pulling his shirt off. We get set up on a nice gravel bar and even though it's where the cattle come down to drink and wade I feel pretty good because it's around 7 p.m. and the cows almost always graze because it's getting shady and cooler. Now there is only one way in and one way out and I've got fishing equipment and a 4 and 2 yr. old. So we get to fishing and within 10 minutes I hear something, here comes all 80 head of cattle trampling down the path straight to the river directly where we are at. I only have about 10 seconds to grab both kids and get them out of the way to a part of the bank that I still have no idea how I got up it with both of them!
So we walk to the truck and the kids are crying because they want to go fishing, never mind I just saved their life from swarming bees and crazy cattle. I then drive back up to the working facility (staying very far from the bee nest) and call the cattle because they are used to being fed. Sure enough they all come up within 5 minutes and I then head back to the river shutting a crucial gate that keeps them in another pasture and from getting to the river! When we get back to our stuff the fishing pole is broken into 3 pieces from the cattle stomping all over it and the bobber/floater is missing but everything else is there but crushed down into the gravel and dirt. I made it work and we fished for about 45 minutes and caught NOTHING! The kids didn't care and still had fun, the 4 yr. old enjoyed telling mommy about daddy running down the road pulling his shirt off. The bumblebee stings don't hurt that bad now but seem to make the muscle sore in that area. Good memories indeed. Great story for when they get older also.
