Farm bill

And we see more good out of the everything else. I think that's the part that pays for your county ext. office??

Soooooo, let's see.

All the money government throws around for students has allowed the education industry to raise tuition at 3 times the rate of inflation.

All the money government throws at healthcare has allowed the healthcare industry to raise prices to several times what they should be. The Surgery Center of Oklahoma, using the free market, can charge 1/5 to 1/10 the regular rates.

So, everyone complains about the lazy slobs on food stamps, but do you think that program is really designed to help the poor, or big ag, which provides food for the programs?

How many lobbyists are working for the poor?

To be clear, I am not advocating helping the poor in this way. It has been a disaster - the war on poverty has increased it, especially since dads have been replaced with a government check.

I read kind of slow so you may have to type slower so I can keep up
Are you insinuating that the food stamp program is benefitting big ag( whatever your definition of that is)
That all the twinkies, Doritos and coca cola bought at Walmart with food stamps that the real beneficiary is big ag ?
If so could you elaborate ?

What /\ said.

And who the heck is "big ag"?
Can we ask him how many acres and how many pairs he has or is that verboten?
Does this mean you can guarantee that absolutely nothing you ever produced ended up in a lb of hamburger someone bought with a food stamp? Not a hot dog, slice of baloney or a drop of milk? Not a single egg?

Djinwa, good post you got me thinking in a different direction. If food stamps were stopped today how far would the price of beef fall per pound?? And all other farm commodities, we could be in a real mess.

Reckon just maybe some able bodied individuals might get a job and still purchase food like before but with their money ?

According to Salt, Sugar, Fat by Michael Moss, the government spent millions on buy and storing milk for the purpose of keeping milk prices high. Is really the role of our government, and does this fit into the model of free-trade/capitalism that we're all led to believe is how we're run?

And to greybeard, I don't understand how working a certain amount of acres or running a certain number of cattle determines whether or not a person is able to see stupidity. :bs: is still :bs: it doesn't matter how big an operation a guy runs. :2cents:

That would be nice. I hate going to the grocery store and see someone buying case after case of soda and bag after bag of chips with their foodstamps. If they're going to buy food, it should be real food and not crap. At the least, if they want to buy crap it should come out of their pocket.

I want them to go back to the old food stamps
I don't them to be able pass it off as a debit card
I want them to have to pull out the funny money for the world to see, I want there to be some shame in taking a hand out when you're capable of providing for yourself

Yes I would like to see that happen Cross_7, but most of the jobs those kind of folks do have gone overseas. Thanks to the unions and our own government. One of these days we will see it happen. Because if your dependent on the government to live you will starve, it's just a matter of time now.

Nothing I didn't already know, but a political analyst was talking about it on the radio this morning. He said that it included the "food stamp" portion because it was the only way "urban" congressmen would vote for it. All of them need to be able to go home, and brag about all the good they are doing.
Me personally-----------I think our government encourages a cheap food supply. I've got a feeling we would be an unruley bunch if we got hungry.

The sad thing about the way Ag is being portrayed by the media if it wasn't tied in with food stamps it would be impossible to get the funding for the Ag programs

IMO I thought doing away with the direct payment was a good deal( I used to get a direct check on a place because it had a cotton allotment, I never farmed it of intended to)

I'm for "cool" and according to NCBA there will be huge repercussions(mostly from Canada and Mexico) for not doing away with it
I'd like to know why the NCBA was really pushing to remove it, I'd bet it restricts someone from being sneaky and underhanded in making a dollar.
It's stupid as is. I like to see country of origin labeled instead of "North American"
I'd like to know if the meat was Mexican or American when I make enchiladas :D

I know it's asking too much but I'd like to see crop insurance self sustaining and in the years that there is a surplus of funds that that money be saved for years like 2012 instead being pilfered like in the past.
Then when there is big crop failures(2012) the funds are in place so no one can cry that tax dollars are being spent to bail out farmers.

Not to mention beer, wine, lottery tickets and cigarettes.

I know it's hard to comprehend but there are people who get up every day, go to work at a 40 hour+ a week job and still have to rely on food stamps. That's what the current minimum wage gets us. You either pay them now or pay them later. As it is, the Walmarts, fast foods etc. won't pay them anything, so I as a taxpayer have to foot the bill. The Waltons laugh all the way to the bank.

I don't disagree that through some unfortunate events that are beyond your control that could be the case, not in great numbers, but it happens.
There are people that need and should receive food stamps, no argument.
But there is a huge population that are either too lazy, don't have enough drive or ambition or moral standards to go out and provide for themselves.

The biggest problem I see are the young girls with 2-3 or more kids and no husband.
They don't have a job or a way to provide for their children and sure aren't setting a good example on what type of human to aspire too, nor do they attempt to help mold a child to a better life
All they are doing is breeding another generation of welfare recipients and most have no hope or desire of ever changing that.

If you want some credibility so to not to think I'm out of touch and was raised with wealth and privilege
I can validate my story, but I don't want make anyone cry so if you want to know PM me

There's a bunch that sell them for .50 on the dollar. And by drugs or whatever with the money. Around here that's the way the terrorist at the convenience stores are making it and no one else can.

That seems to be the going price here also. The same also qualify for a cell phone. Those are the ones that if you drove up and offered them work they would run from you. I know there is abuse.

I did a quick google of the number of folks on food stamps and google said there were 47 million food stamp recipients.

47 million!!! That's over $16000 per person. I know the entire $756 billion isn't going to food stamps, but it's still a lot of money per person. How in the heck does our gov't justify that cost?

Just for the sake of clarity - that's over the 10 years of the program life which would be a simple average of $1,600 a year per person if every drop of the $756 billion goes to food stamps.
