Temperatures have finally dropped. It was 38 here this morning. I don't vaccinate when temperatures are above 50 to 55.

I usually use Bovi Shield Gold FP 5 L5 or VL5 HB. This year I used Titanium FP 5 L5 HB. It is not as expensive.

So every cow got:

Titanium FP 5 L5 HB
Covexin 8
And was poured with Eprinex.

ron, why don't you vaccinate if temps are above 50 - 55?

The immune response can cause stress even elevated temperatures. Somewhat like a fever. If it is hot, it can suppress the level of immunity achieved.

Do as you wish, but your 50-55 range is unnecessarily low.

I adhere to the 85/70 rule... put forward by some of the leading immunology researchers... if daytime temps are above 85 and not dropping below 70 at night, heat stress is sufficient to warrant holding off from vaccinating - or doing anything stressful, for that matter.

Preface: I vaccinate in the morning when temperatures are in the 50 to 55 range. The temperature will get higher as the day progresses. But I try to keep maximum daytime temperatures under 75.

I realize it is low. I vaccinate in March and October. Using those temperature limits is very easy to achieve. There have been times when I have fall bulls or heifers that fall outside the total herd vaccination period when I have vaccinated at higher temperatures.

Thanks Lucky - I was also going to question that statement. Unless we are going to have extreme heat (very unusual for us), I don't even think about the temperature unless I'm going to freeze my arse off. Hard on the fingers drawing syringes. LOL
I have only 5 that were fall calvers this year. Last one is due next week. They will be getting about the same. Spring calvers will just get PourOn & Lepto w/ HB
