While visiting with neighbor, he showed me some rolls of hay he had just done. He had metal rods pointed on one end, 3ft approximately length, shoved into the bales. He pulled the rods out to test the temperature. He uses a temperature meter to monitor so he knows if it’s warmer or cooler since last checked. He had one roll that the rod was warm to the touch which bale came from outside shaded windrows. The rest were cool. This helps him determine if they’re ready to go in barn.
