The flys you were dealing with are probably horn flies.They are smaller and usually concentrate on the back and underside.Larger flies around the face are face flies.Like Dun said,a face mop or similar will help as will spraying or fly tags.

I spray the face and ears not near the eyes or where it could run in their eyes it helps alot. I switch sprays every month to.

Very surprised of the low count of horn flies around here too. Did Warrior fly tags yesterday to combat the face flies. Cows look great this morning
