I have very exciting news! :) We're looking into a loan program through our extension office that will give us a loan to start our own herd of cows and calves. We're still going to look through it and discuss it to decide what we're going to do if we get it. But our plan is to buy a 2 or 3 good angus cross yearling heifers that are ready to breed and a 2 or 3 good purebred shorthorn heifers that are ready to breed to go on our acerage and AI the angus cross to Club Calf bulls and the shorthorns to shorthorn bulls. Then after they calf if the calves are good we'll decide to the ones we want to keep to show and the replacement heifers , then sell the other ones. We have 3 1/2+ acres of pasture that we'll keep them on plus we might be buying about 5 more acres right next to our other pasture. Do you have any suggestions or comments?

Talk to your extension agent about the animal unit per acre ratio where you live. Four to six head may be too many for 3 1/2 acres.

Also, determine long term cost for maintaining the cattle, ie: hay & feed cost, etc...
Put the pencil to the paper and determine your budget, then take it from there. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn about the business & money aspects of raising cattle.

Good luck!
