HOUSTON—A two-year-old boy from Canada is dead after being left unattended in a sweltering SUV outside a home in Houston, Texas on Thursday.
Reports say the unidentified boy is from Toronto.
The Houston Chronicle says the boy was apparently overlooked in the confusion of several relatives visiting the home at the same time.
Harris County sheriff’s detectives say the boy’s father noticed him missing at about 2 p.m. ET and found him in the SUV parked in the driveway.
Sgt. Ben Beall told the newspaper the toddler was unresponsive and that the temperature inside the vehicle was about 50 C.
Family members called 911 and tried to revive the child, but he died at about 3:30 p.m. at Houston Northwest Medical Center.
The boy had returned with relatives from a trip to the grocery store and Beall says seven people were inside the compact SUV.
"In the confusion of unloading the vehicle and all the different families, the 2-year-old was apparently left unattended," Beall told the newspaper.
Relatives from France also were staying at the home, officials said. Attention also was focused on tending to a 7-year-old who is autistic, officials said.
Criminal charges are not expected to be filed in the case, Beall said.
