Even with great weather, trouble comes

Ever had a calving season where you feel like you're living "murphy's law"? That's me this year. I've had everything from a cow getting a prolapse mended only to exit the chute and dislocate her hip, to a cow getting its head stuck in a feeder wagon, falling/getting knocked over by another cow and suffering spinal damage. This is getting old... :deadhorse:

I'm at an 18% calving loss this year. Its absolutely brutal. Vet bills piling up as high as the pile of dead calves.

My weather has been far from great though.

May I ask why the high percentage loss?? Some years do stink, but I can't remember ever having that kind of loss with calves.

Worst scours Ive ever had. Post mort'd a few, ecoli, rota virus and crypto going thru them. Add cold wet, weather. Moved herd a few times (no easy chore mid calving), going thru bedding like crazy. Tube feeding multiple calves multiple times a day, IV's for others. Bought out a couple towns supplies of electrolytes now. First defence, metacam, nuflor, home remedies, (other stuff I'd have to look up what all we've tried) Some bounce back, others just get weaker and weaker til they die. Have a few vets involved. One calf can go thru 10-12 liters a day!

Pretty near done calving, and I'm glad when it will be over. Its been 2 months of no sleep, stress and heartache. I worry about how it set the calves back that did survive, as we really brought some back from near dead. Not to mention all the cows without calves on them now, and the ones that do have calves back on them, some went a week without being sucked, cause their calves were laid out... Can't be good on milk supply.

I've noticed scours this year seem to be harder to treat also and that's with relatively dry weather. I'm down almost 10% on my calves and just shy of 5% on my cows. Never had a year like this before and I hope not to repeat it. Takes the fun out of it for sure.
