EPDs

What are they? Also, what are "signing fees" as applied to AI?
Thanks

Expected Progeny Difference (EPD) They are a method of comparing one breeding animal to another within a breed. For example, Bull A has a WW EPD of 20, bull B has a WW EPD of 40. One would Expect that over time, bred to the same cows, Bull B's calves would weigh 20 more pounds at weaning than calves sired by Bull A. EPDs never, ever tell you what something will weigh.

The Angus breed requires an AI certificate be bought when registering a calf sired by AI, unless you own the bull. Perhaps other breeds have some sort of "signing fee"?

The Charolais association requires the owner of the bull (at the time of conception) to sign and/or authorize the registration of a charolais calf.
You might pay the owner of the bull a signing fee if his bull bred your cow whether it be A.I. or natural conception. Usually used for A.I.
About the same thing Frankie called "buying a certificate".
Every Char bull does not have a "signing fee" but the owner still must sign the registration application.

Frankie was right on with his explanation of EPD. ;-)
