We've had some discussions on the board lately about how many producers understand EPDs. I firmly believe most commercial cattlemen understand the concept, at least in my area. Though I don't know how representative this board will be of commercial cattlemen, I'd like to see how many people on these boards do understand EPDs. Thanks...

But you didn't vote....

I voted . Do you have some special way of telling who voted and who didn't . You do understand the process don't you Frankie?

Apparently not. But when I clicked on "view results" it all became clear to me. Thanks...

I voted yes but I don't claim to understand the intricacies. While I have a basic understanding of the concepts I don’t pay attention to them or use them in purchase decisions.

Part of the problem I percieve with the question is that some folks think they know about and how to use EPDs, but ar mistaken.

I couldn't agree more.

I haven't voted yet, Frankie. Do I understand them compared to who? Compared to you? No way! Compared to what I once did? Well, sure I understand them better.

I even asked for some numbers on the last bulls I bought. Still not sure I trust the numbers, but I'm gonna try to use the tools that you registered guys provide for me.

Frankie, you've had a lot of discussion of EPD's on the Breeds Board lately. Why don't you point out somebody there that you would consider a 0. ;-) Then, I'll vote yes if I think I understand them better than that person. I'll vote no if I understand them less.

I agree. I understand "what" EPD's are, but I don't necessarily fully understand what they mean or what they can supposedly tell me.

I enjoy competing against the incompent losers who don't understand EPD's. The problem I have is that we need to implement a national ID system but you hobby farmers don't know a hole from your ass so were in a pickle here. If I have it my way you will comply or you will be phased out like you should be. You my friends are a liability that as a FOR PROFIT rancher I cannot afford. Take your tax right offs elswhere friends we now have a AG secretary from NEBRASKA!!!!!!!

Your name isn't very fitting of your attitude.

I agree DR. Funny thing most of the the big ranches in our area are owned by lawyers for tax right offs. Size has nothing to do with hobby farmer statement.

I think I like competing against you because you misspelled incompetent. Plenty of competent cowmen can't type or spell but in this case the irony is pretty good.

Thought you liked to compete. Is hiring more lawyers and implementing more regs your idea of being competitive? Sounds like you can’t make it from here to there without crutches.

I enjoy competing against people who think they know it all.

As far as EPD's, I voted 'Yes', I understand what they are and how they can play a part in animal selection; however, I do not use, or look at them on a regular basis for a particular breed.

I had to vote no. I am very weak on EPD's.

I keep gaining. For my requirements I am interested in the basics: Can I can expect a small first calf the first time out of my heifers with little help from me, etc. My vet and mentor does most of the straw picking(AI)with a nod from me like I really know. Learning is more important at my stage of ranch and herd development.

I think us hobby people do have something to contribute to the industry however.

Now about my anatomy and holes in the ground--I can only say my butt gets tired when I dig post holes by hand. Why is that?

It's good you have a mentor. I, too, think "hobby" people have something to contribute. Something like 80% of the beef sold in the US is produced in herds of less than 50 cattle. Not many people can live on the profit from 50 head of cattle, so they likely mostly hobby farms. In my area, the average herd is less than 50 cattle.

Heck, if you want to look at that way, Express Ranches, is a "hobby" operation. They probably have thousands of cattle, but the owner is a multi-millionaire, maybe a billionaire. I doubt that he and his family are living in the style they're living in on his cattle profits.
