Hey everyone i was just wondering what people think of the embryology and cattle flushing of the future. Is it going to be a big business or will it fizzle out? Thanks for your thoughts
 
It is already a big business. I don't think it is going anywhere but up. I believe 11% of the calves registered through the Angus Association last year where the result of ET. Which would be somewhere between 40 and 50 thousand.
 
Definitely big business with more producers using it every year. We are using it with all our cows and will have a purebred herd of good pedigree cattle in a few years instead of generations!

You can make a lot of money but it is also a lot of work. However it is a very rewarding profession. Good luck. Keep us informed with your progress.
 
Do a good job and you will be in high demand.
People will send you airline tickets to come do work for them.
Get careless and do a bad job and even your buddies may lose your phone number.
You must provide excellent service with integrity to any client you take on.

I once used an embryologist who kind of put my cow on the back burner at his place. He got carless and never got a good flush. This Cow gave between 10-15 good embyos before and after him. But he got nada nothing fertilized. I later found that he did not provide the same care for her that he did for his "good" customers. Every paying customer that is worth having at all, is worth your full attention. You burn the little guy just once and he may just come back to haunt you later.

There is more money on the human side.Get a really good education with top grades and practicum with a bovine embryo group for experience then you can move on to human embryology. That is a booming business and will get bigger and bigger, more than cattle could ever achieve.Much needed also.

Well from the qualifications it takes to become an embryologist (Hold an earned doctorate degree (PhD.) from an accredited institution in a biological-science) and depending on what year you are in University you will probably have years to worry about that.
 
I dont think you have to have a degree or doctorate to be an embryologist.

You don't have to have a PhD but most often embryologists are vets due to the drugs involved. As far as clientel, it might be a good idea to try to find an older guy to work with that is wanting to retire in a couple years.....get some experience and then possibly take over his clientel.

Its never to early to work on the busness side of things.

Do a good job, be kind, care. Get in with your local extention officer, be involved in the ag community BEFORE you try to make some cash off us...

You will get a rep one way or another and that starts NOW.

You may have to slowly start your business while doing your other job. You may even have to do some free ones at first.
Along side of what Angus said. You might even try to get in with a ranch that does their own embryo work.
 
I studied embryo work and then turned down a job as an embryologist. The work is there for sure i just don't want to travel 6 days a week. I am also moving into ivf for the simple fact that i can stay home. I've been down your road and recently if you want a view from someone who has traveled your path send me a pm and i'd be glad to give the heads up on what worked well for me and what wasn't what i thought it would be.
