Just now we saw 5 elk looking out the kitchen window. This is the first time seeing elk on our place. I have seen hundreds down the road a couple miles. In the past I have seen tracks in the snow up on the hill in the winter. We have a list of over 50 species of critters we have seen from the house. Now if we can find the list we can add elk to it.

It's nice to hear that you have the Elk that you are seeing. Sooner or later you were bound to see them having seen the tracts. Let's hope you don't start seeing them too often. If that happens, beware of your mind telling you strange things such as "I wish we had more wolves to control the runaway elk population." Might sound strange, but I heard those words 30 years ago in Oregon within the Willamette Valley a ways north of Corvallis.

A dark day….
Only 5. The big herd lives about 3 miles away where there is an alfalfa field and alfalfa hay in the stack yard. Reports from the neighbors claim this herd south of the river is a lot smaller than it was 20-30 years ago. I don't have much to attract them here, On the other hand I have big horn sheep and they don't.

Well it’s a damn good thing there were only five, because unless your kitchen is substantially larger than mine there would be a severe crowding problem.
I am going to have to be more careful about how I word things. I was the one looking out the kitchen window. The elk were about 300 yards away out in the field. That is about 276 meters away for you Canadians.
