A friend of mine had a calf brake its back leg last year. It got infected so he penned it up and gave it all kinds of medicine for weeks and it didnt get better. He finally shot it and had it made into hamburger. I asked him wasnt he concerned about the withdrawal time of the drugs . He said no. Everytime he grills hamburger now I make myself scarce.

There are folks around here that will take road kill off the highway....a fresh dead cow is a real treat, they will come out and haul it off....no I don't share meals with them.

My cousins up in West Virginia will sometimes take home a deer that jumped out in front of them on the road. Critters killed like that are just sure to have a fevered nature in the meat. No thanks.

I took home a deer once that I found caught in a fence. It was still alive when I found it. It ate just fine. Now if it was already dead - then NO.

Here's one I've been wondering about though. I have a 13 yr old herford that has cancer eye. She has a month old calf and I've pulled her from the bull before she calved so she wouldn't breed back. I know she probably won't bring $300 at the sale so I was thinking about weaning the calf, feeding her out and butchering her. I know the head will be condemmed but there isn't anything in there I'd be willing to eat anyway. What do ya'll think?

I had a cow with cancer eye this summer. I knew I wouldn't get much if anything for it at the sale barn, but the vet said that it would be ok to eat. It just didn't appeal to me though and I just shot her and called the rendering truck.
