Does anybody have an alternative to boxed hair dye for black angus hair dyeing? We have one that is sensitive & needs major dyeing to cover the red. Help!

Thanks. Is semi-permanent dye alot better than permanent? Think we used permanent dye, so it was probably our fault....
Also, have you ever used the temporary rinses? Bet they don't stand up to the washings we need to do on her....

OK. Will give 'er a try next time. Thanks! It's a learnin' experience. Never had trouble before. Over & out.

Just curious. Doesn't the red color on a black animal mean that the animal is missing a mineral that they need?

There could be something to that but there are also a lot more color genes in cattle than the ones you usually hear about. Try this link. It is a little hard to follow and some of it is just theory but it may shed some light.

I've read about the deficiency theory, too. Doesn't apply to our cattle though, as they are well-fed & given plenty of supplement. Ours are reg. black angus, & they turn red from being bleached by the sun. We don't stall our show calves to keep them black, which is one alternative.

Use the Young Color II as suggested by cowboy. When you mix a gallon, add one quart Sullivan's Kleen Sheen. It will help a great deal with the skin issue, but limits the rinsing to about six or seven times. Also, buy your dye at a Beauty Supply house much cheaper.

Hey, thanks AAOK! Great advice! Now we're getting somewhere! :D Do you mix a quart of the Young Color from only 1 bottle? I think we've been doin' this thing ALL wrong!

Sometimes the red can be just color-dyed from the sun, too.

Might try top dressing feed with a small amount of copper sulfate. Had a friend who raises Maines use that and swore it kept them from turning red. Think he used about a tablespoon per feeding.

A copper deficiancy will normally show reddish hair mostly at the belly. If you are feeding a quality mineral (probably the single most important ingredient for feeding a Show Calf), the red hair is just dead hair, sun bleached, or both. Pull the worst out with a grill brick, and then dye the rest.

Thanks! Didn't know about the "brick", either! We've been showing for 8 yrs., & are still learnin' stuff!

That Simbrah steer I had's hair was sunburnt back on his quarter but I just kept working with it and it eventually went black. Only problem is if it's bad enough, it doesn't grow well enough.
