First, it would help to know the breed of animal you are refering too, then you might be able to get some info on these boards from the breeders of those type cattle

i have a cow that had a dwarf looking calf last year. she was bred to her own sire when i bought her. she is half holstein and half maine anjou, this year she had a calf by my bull and it was little bitty heifer, half the normal size. it is not big kneed or anything just petite. she is going to market this year.

Here's the link to the American Angus Assn site that shows known carriers of the dwarfism gene.

If the answer you're looking for isn't there, email them. The Assn is very good and responding to emails. Good luck....

What's a snorter?
Thx,

Its a breathing disorder that some dwarfs are born with. they pant like you see one do on a hot day but they do it all the time. ive only seen one in my life. in a hillbilly herd dont think the owner even new it had problems.

What other types of disorders are common in dwarfs?
I think I have a dwarf hereford heifer-- she gags on her feed alot, even vomits. Perhaps she has a narrow esophagus?
She also pants when she's gagging up her feed, it's an intermittent thing though.

Post a photo and lets take a look at her.

she might just be a hog i got a ol cow that thinks one might be eating her part of the feed and will choke trying too eat too much at a time the best sign their a dwarf is if they dont grow much after birth :P look out for a bulging forehead and pot gut ;-)

Is a dwarf born small, or are they normal size and just don't grow? I have a hereford calf that just isn't right - just can't put my finger on it - even looks like he has down syndrome! Just wondering if he is a dwarf. He was about 100# at birth but is much smaller now than a calf born the same day that was smaller at birth. I supplement a bottle of formula each evening for my own piece of mind since he isn't growing. Looked online but can't find much info on dwarfism features.

...know that it's the sire(s) ...

what do you mean by this?

it looks like to me that you mean the sires are the carriers.

i can guarantee you that the parents of both calves are carriers.

Unlike the scur gene it does take 2 to tango. Take the case of High Valley 7D7, he was found to be a dwarf carrier as he was flushed to his full sister by accident.

Had they never had done this, doubtful it would have been found. They used to do 100 or 50 father daughter mating to see if there were any freaky genes kicking around. I think the AI companies would be to scared to do that now, I would be afraid to see what would come out of some of these sires today.

I'll try to post a picture of my heifer tomorrow. I'm pretty sure she's a dwarf.
What happens if you breed a dwarf? I was thinking we could get her bred by a friend's Dexter and get a black baldy type calf-- but wondering if it could possibly be too big of a calf ( normal sized)
Just curious, probably won't do anything but butcher her, unless I run across someone wanting an ugly "mini" Hereford :)
