I have three bulls that are Monument 3147 sons. Two of them are about as close to perfect as I can imagine a range bull to be and the third one is okay but doesn't go out and push as hard as the other two. The two that push have really opened my eyes to Hereford cattle.

This certainly is an awesome looking bull. But also brings up a good point. What place to EPD's have in bull selection?

Just for the heck of it I looked up his EPD's. While he has great growth numbers, his calving ease, bw and maternal calving ease EPDs are really low. From the numbers he would produce quick growing calves, if you can get them calved successfully. Seems like you might end up pulling a bunch of his calves and certainly would not use him on heifers.

Here is his EPD graph: http://www.herfnet.com/online/cgi-b...5E5EDE41BE1EA3D0A0A1315380F1212121B1219E71815

On a good looking bull like this do folks just buy based on appearance or do EPD's enter into the decision?

My bulls are all right in that same range. Over angus/brangus based cows I haven't had any problems calving them. This year was the first year of calving the baldie daughters and they did just fine. That BW puts him right around what a "calving ease" continental bull would do.

I was not going to bid on that bull I was just admiring him from a far. I saw their bull sale averaged 4,865 and the high lot was 9,250. His birth weight would not be an issue on my gerts.
