Not where you are
Well, we have to use a softener here at the house because, of the iron in the water. We had a well cave in so I had to switch all of the water tanks/waterers and troughs over to the house well, thank goodness we've been getting a lot of rain this past couple of weeks! I went to put minerals out the other day as I do every 12-14 days but, they had plenty left which is very odd. I wonder if the cattle are getting a fair amount of salt out of the water that runs through the softener, The water doesn't taste salty to me, and in theory the salt doesn't actually touch our water, so the know alls say, and I've never heard others complain about our water being salty, is this possible?

Perhaps it's just the opposite? The water softening system is removing the minerals, thus providing a higher quality of water without all the stuff in it to maybe tie up nutrients in the animals system? I don't know that that is true - I am just offering a possibility.

I know softened water doesn't taste salty but I do know when my sister had to restrict salt intake during her pregnancy the doctor told her to avoid drinking the water that went through their softner. She found even using ice cubes made from the soft water contained enough sodium to make her retain water.

So I'd say the sodium in the water could cause the cattle to not want extra salt very much.
