Just picked up a new Miniature Schnauzer puppy. 10 weeks old from a highly recommended breeder.
Question on cropped ears. My previous dog did not have his ears cropped. This one has had them done. They are healed, but she has tape on them to hold them upright. She said to leave tape on for 5 days.
Anyone have experience with cropped ears. Do I need to worry about them not standing up?? Nothing worse than a dog with wrong ear set - looks awful. So I want to do whatever is right for him.
He never has seen the "outdoors" so potty training is being intensive. I crate train, but he does not "respect" his crate. Has had two accidents in crate (urinated). Does not whimper or scratch to get out to go.
Heard him get up & move around last night, so I got right up & put him out in time. (his crate is next to my bed)
Any comments on ears???

I had a friend who raised Great Danes, I do remember the taping and keeping tied was imperative...I don't remember the amount of time to keep them up, but I am pretty sure it was longer than 5 days. Keep up with the crate training....is the crate "too large" for the breed? If she has too much room in the crate, that could be the problem. I just bought a French Bulldog a couple of weeks ago, and we are still working on the training also....just remember not only do they have to learn the training, their bladders have to get used to the time length between being let out. Also, are you offering water and food all the time? I feed twice a day, every 12 hours til the training is under control.

Crate is right size. He's just so QUIET! Being a Schnauzer, I'm sure that will change!
Feeding three times a day. That was his schedule before. Don't want to change his diet now. Just having a problem with urinating in crate - not in house. But for only having him home since Sat evening, he's doing great.

I raised schnauzers for about 8 years. Only one that had ears cropped was my female. She'd already been done when I got her. I hated it. She had more ear troubles in general than any dog I've ever seen. For some reason on schnauzers when their ears are cropped the ear hair grows abundantly and you have to stay on top of it. Vet told me the reason she has so many ear troubles is because the ears were exposed to foreign material at all times.....I no longer raise schnauzers, but never did crop any of the pups ears. I think they are cuter with their ears left alone anyway. :lol: Also something else about their hair, Silver one's Salt and pepper one's dont seem to have trouble as much as one's that are pure black. That black hair is terribly hard to clip, clippers just won't work right on it. Its alot finer hair than the other colors. My female was black, male was salt and pepper. I could clip him in about 10 minutes, she'd take foreverrrrrrrrrrrr.
On the quietness, if they are raised in a home where they are the only dog, they are much less likely to become barkers, than if they are with several.
I have miniature wiener dogs now, they very rarely bark unless being played with.

Jersey Lilly - Yes I've been for-warned by another breeder about the potential ear problems. My last Schnauzer did not have his ears cropped, but the one before that (my daughters) did and I used to pluck the hair out of his ears quite regularly. I plucked the last one also, but not as much. I never realized it was because of the cropping that there was so much difference.
We had another "dry" night. I'm learning to just get up & take him out when he starts wiggling around in his crate. Made it til 4am this morning!

I have a new pup (mini wiener) She's a doll. Except for the fact that she absolutely positively hates the crate. First night I tried to let her sleep with me. Mr Lilly ended up wakin me up at 3 am cuz she was doin laps around the bed..hehe
so she went back to her crate.
then night before last I tried again, she made it till about 5 am before thinkin it was time to play
Last night I tried again, this mornin when I woke up at 7 am, she was layin right where I put her, just layin there awake...blinkin at me...(mama did I do good?)

They sure can get under your skin in a hurry. After loosing my last Schn in July, I wasn't ready for a replacement (not that you can ever "replace" a previous "pet child"). But I am VERY ready now. Love the little bugger already. And he is SOOOO attached to me :heart: It's great!

Jersey, your new baby is adorable! I just love miniature wienie dogs. They are the most loyal and loving dogs. My first mini wienie was a female my kids named Hank. She was ten years old when she passed on.

I was given a dapple wienier as a gift 2 years ago, but I'm thinking she's not pure daschund because she has grown larger than expected and her legs are kinda long. I love her to death anyway!

Sure hated that house training chore, even though daschunds are fairly easily trained.

We have Shih Tzus and some Maltese Shih Tzu cross dogs. They are very intelligent. As well we have the usual array of big dogs. Kelpies and Border Collie cross. Love all our dogs. We have nine little fluffies and 6 big dogs.
