Believe it or not, but my Border Collie Austrailian Shepard mix is. I was just walking her around so I could look at the freshly mown pasture and I walked her up by my calves and she started to run the other way. Scardey Cat, I'll say.

You don't mention how old the dog is, what her background is, or whether she has ever even seen cattle before. Not all dogs are born to be cattledogs, but that doesn't mean they are not good dogs in other ways. What is your point?

At least your dog isnt like my Walker Hound, he thinks he IS one of the cattle. He walks around with the cattle eating grass, stands at the hay bale eating hay, and eats feed out of the trough.

I had a Brittany Spaniel that I hunted with for years that was afraid of water. He wouldn't jump across a creek and would run a mile to go around a mud puddle.

I wish mine was scared of water. Its kind of hard going fishing when the dog jumps in and chases the lure around. I guess he will stop when he hooks himself once. Well hes not the smartest dog, so it will probably take a few times getting stuck with a hook. He also likes to play with the calf. Ive seen him actually climb on top of the calf while its laying down, but doesnt seem to bother it at all.

It depends on who or what cows are around. We have some heifers that can't stnad the dog and chase him out. He still comes. He doesn't go in the pastures unless we are in it.

We used to have a Samoyed that would wait until the Momma's went out, then go out and play with the calves laying in the lane. Somehow he never scared them, though. He was also bad about standing in the gate of the trailer when we were trying to load cattle, and grinning at us when we went to see why the cattle wouldn't load. Needless to say, he tested Dad's patience on more than one occasion!   The dog wasn't stupid, though, just the opposite - he was just a little mischevious. Dad laughs about it now, but he was NOT amused at the time! Of course, he hadn't mellowed yet either!   King - the dog - would also watch out for, and protect my pet rabbits when they got out. All I had to do was look for the dog, and I'd find my rabbits. Dang, I miss that dog!

I had a German Shepherd that was afraid of cattle. He'd jump out of the truck and wait at the gate for us to come back..My dad asked me to lead the milkcow to the pasture,so a made him come along..He hung back behind the cow, which made her lead better,as she didn't like dogs. We got to the pasture,Phil (the dog) stayed outside the fence..I let the cow go,and walked off to see what was what... Suddenly, there was a moo in front of me,a moo behind me,and the cow was chargeing directly at me!! There was a blurr of black and tan,and Phil was at the cows nose snapping and snarling..He turned her away from me,then ran for the fence..The next time we visited the pasture,he waited at the gate, like always..

At least your dog didn't hide behind you with a cow chargeing..

some thing comes around our yard at night every so often--and scares our german shepard--won't come near the house or around the cows for 4-5 days--I run about 50 sheep --when the dogs in one of her cowardly moods I can't do squat with those sheep --they only run from the dog ----not me
Ive noticed german shepards are cowards anyway they only fight when they know for sure they're going to win--mabey just smart :D

My long haired dauschund will get underneath the trailer when we are trying to load or unload. I mean, we will go to back up and he'll be under there moving along with the trailer. I know he'll get run over one of these days. It will be one of those things we can't avoid. I have also had several dauschunds and part dauschunds that are pretty good herding dogs and will nip at the heels of the cattle just like a heeler. Had one that got stepped on when I was little and she dragged her back legs around for a week or so then got better.

My Sheltie's terrified of cattle....and for good reason! My heifer caught him under his belly with her nose once and threw him into the fence. Poor dog...

I'm not sure who this post is in response to, and I'm a little confused as to what is behind the last statement - Phil might have been afraid of cows, but he sure came through for you when it counted!

Knew a guy got hurt when a cow charged the dog and it tryed to hide behind him--Cow went right thro him after the dog. Yeah,Phil came thro for me when I needed him..He just didn't like cows.. Bear, his half brother, was a cow dog..The bull over the fence would break in..We'd go out,Bear would run between the fighting bulls, ours would go find a shade tree.. The neighbor bull would chase Bear 'till he led him thro the fence, then Bear would attack... Got to where we'd drive up,the bull would see us and take off for the fence.. Never had a GS that was a coward.. Guess the owner makes the dog..

Oh, I see now. Thanks for explaining. :) I don't know if it's the owner, or the temperament of the dog - probably both.
