While the young man in the video was obviously offended by the article and felt compelled to make this impassioned speech in rebuttal, I felt it necessary to read the offending article to see if the intent of the author really was to impune agriculture as a profession. so, here's the article http://education.yahoo.net/articles/most_useless_degrees.htm What I took from the article is this: 1. The author doesn't have the slightest idea why anyone would want to work in ag in the 1st place. He's a city boy and wants to stay that way. While his tone was condescending toward ag, it wasn't any more so than toward theatre majors. He seems to think being flippant is his niche. 2. He didn't say that ag is a useless profession. He said that the degree is useless because employers anticipate there will be a net loss of jobs in this field. 3. The survey of employers wanting to hire someone with an ag degree is somewhat useless in itself, (as are the statistics of most studies) since it does not encompass the self employed. It would be interesting to survey current ag majors to find out their employment goals after graduation. If their hope is to work for someone else, then the statistics presented by the author may be useful. If their intent is to take over their family farm, start their own, or in some other way work for themselves, then it is the authors information that is useless.
