Have had Dish Satellite TV for will be17 years 6 months from now. Have had the same package for the last 12 years, same equipment everything. Knew the price for the Service had increased during that time which is to be expected.

But it got to where there were more and more commercials that started out about 5 minutes interruption of the programs you would be watching. Which wasn't that big of a deal but those commercials eventually got to be longer and longer to the point they was lasting 15 sometimes 20 minutes. And even then got more frequent. Instead of one commercial an hour. It grew to two then three.

So I got to where I would record what I wanted to watch and fast forward through the commercials which was a pain to mess with. So a couple of weeks ago my service quit working as it has occasionally over the years. But no biggie, have a service contract, call their technician and they would have it fixed either that day or the next at the latest. Then that got to where they would take two or three days before they would get around to fixing it. Which wasn't that big of a deal. Usually had lots of things recorded that I could watch.

But as of about a month ago. It was going to take them 3 weeks before a tech could come fix the problem. Wife had been working them and they told her that because our equipment was so old that it might be beyond repair and that we might have to up grade. Told her that they had a new package deal with basically the same programming we have always had but you could avoid any commercials or interruptions from 7 a.m in the morning through 4 a.m to the next morning !!! Great deal !!! No more having to fast forward through commercials. Called Hopper Dish service because your service hops right past any commercials.

Wife's says it's $ 9 a month more. We was already paying $ 141 a month. Which the last I knew of was around $ 111 a month but had gradually creep up 😕 Well I thought heck $ 9 a month more to avoid commercials would be worth every penny of it. Tell the wife heck yea let's up grade. They come out and wife and I both watch them hook up our new service. Tech says you can set it up to block commercials from 7 a.m to 4 a.m the next morning or anytime between those hours. How do you want it set ? Why from 7 a.m. to 4a.m. of course I tell the technician. And if possible set it where I don't get any commercials period, none at all. Tech says can only block them from 7a.m. to 4 a.m. So sets it up. We are watching and listening to his operating instructions. And BAM !!! a commercial pops up !!!!? Tell the technician " Hey that's not going to work !!! We up graded to the hopper package right ? No commercials because we are paying more for the same service we was getting for $ 9 a month less before we up graded and still getting the same service but only no commercial interruptions. "

The technician says well yes that's why it's called hopper. But because these companies pay us to advertise their commercials we still have to play them on all Dish channels.

I told him BS that's no going to happen. Spent over an hour on the phone with dish arguing with them and they tried every way in the world to lie their way out of it. Tried offering me their age 55+ senior discount for seniors packages which is a crock. Oferred me a cheaper package with less channels, still full of commercials. Every thing they sell has advertising in all the packages they sell. And the way they was going to give me this package for senior citizens was to do away with my service I have now and sell me a cheaper package they offer to new customers just starting with dish. That being 2 months free of dish TV on the package you buy and one free $ 8 dollar movie during each of those two months. And then you pay full price.

That's their senior or age 55+ deal ??? And I was locked in to where I could have keep the service I had to where they couldn't increase my rates AS. much as they will be doing every 2 years from now own if I keep their service.

I don't pay for TV, so I had no idea it was that expensive. We bought something called Mohu Leaf for about $35.00 maybe 10 years ago. It looks like thin plastic about the size of a sheet of paper. We put it up on the wall and hooked it to our TV. It lets us watch more channels then I care to watch... all for free. ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, lots of PBS channels and a whole bunch I don't remember the names of. I haven't seen many of the shows I hear others mention, but I don't miss them either.

Two things... A good antenna and knowing where the transmission tower is will usually bring in the major networks plus a bunch of stuff you probably wouldn't watch. If you had your location on your profile we'd know how to help you more. Antenna TV is free but it has commercials.

If you have kids, parents, relatives, friends with streaming channels and an internet connection you can pay a share on a streaming service through whomever has it and they can hook you up with their family plan (or whatever they call it) and get all kinds of things with no commercials. We are on my daughter's plan. She lives a state away and we just need her e-mail and a password to sign up and she might have to use her phone to verify a code which appears on your screen. This happens occasionally and we b**ch about it, but it's not really that big a deal considering the value of the TV we get.

And Dish Network may try to scam you if you discontinue their service. They will wait a few months and then tell you that they need some critical part of their equipment back... or they will have to charge you $600 (maybe more). I have no idea what they would do if you ignored them because they house I moved to had an old antenna on it and I sent the part they requested from that antenna back to them.

There are at least 20-30 different streaming options. They all suck if you're used to satellite or cable, unless you're content watching old movies and reruns. Or don't mind taking 5 minutes to change the channel. They all have their trade offs. Also worth mentioning, all of the streaming "live tv" alternatives to satellite are quickly approaching satellite cost. The low costs they used to lure people didn't last long.

I don't mind watching some of the old shows. When dad was alive we were paying $180 per month for Dish Network. Even when we had Dish, I was still watching the old shows, and the same ole movies seem to comer around every six months or so. Now with Amazon Prime, and fox nation it cost me approximately $20 per month. I have thought about getting Paramount Plus so I can watch Star Trek, but have not done that yet. The one thing I have found out that if I want to watch Fox News Shows I have to have a streaming service. With Prime I can still see what is on Fox News, but It is only snippets, but it does keep me informed one what is going on around the world.

Dish got so outrageously expensive, I dropped it last year and went with Hulu streaming for 1/2 the cost. Plus, I get Disney and ESPN bundled in. As M. Magis said, there are tons of options. I have heard good things about YouTube TV, but they don't carry the History Channel, which my wife wanted. We have had it for a little over a year and are very pleased. Plus, no contract or special equipment. If you don't like it, cancel.

You have to have high broadband and a TV that can handle it. But, as cheap as smart televisions are, that shouldn't stop anyone.

This site can tell you precisely how to aim an antenna for the OTA channels. You would be amazed at all of the free content OTA.

Talked with 3 people today that has you tube and they like it. Two of them both told me the problem with you tube is they start out reasonable price wise but constantly keep raising their prices. One of them quit You tube for that reason and the other one said he is looking for a different service his self.

I started noticing over a year ago a lot of the people I work with started using these steaming services and cable TV. Now I know why.

Up on a ridge well above the house there is a juniper that obviously had the top cut off at one time. There is an old antenna on the ground under that tree. They must have had 300-400 yards of cable from that antenna running to the house. I wonder how well it worked at the bet of times.

I'll bet it worked well if they had signal boosters along the way.

I don't want to hijack 504 RP's thread, but if anyone wants to go OTA, there is a set-top box called Tablo. One-time cost of less than $100 (at least it was when I bought mine). It gets all of your locals over-the-air, plus tons of free internet channels. I think I counted and got over 100 internet channels with mine.

From what the old timers say it didn't work well at all. Nobody here got TV until satellite TV came out. They tried but it was just a couple of channels with very poor reception.

Considering the financials in the cattle business, free TV with a little effort might be a lot better than a dish or cable that keeps getting the price raised.
