Other than taking the dog for a long walk to the back forty, do any of you have any ideas on how to stop a dog from digging. She is not a puppy and only does it periodically ... but man can she dig. Her choice spot is right at the front door! Something has got to give. Thanks.

The garden shows say to sprinkle cheyenne pepper where he is digging, I tried it where the dog kept getting on porch it worked for a while then he got used to it, you might try it won't cost much. Also you can bury chicken wire just under the place where he is digging when he hits it he will stop.

If you could fix an electic fence wire that he would touch while digging that would probably help. I read that you should choose a spot where it is ok for him to dig and encourage him to only dig there. You can bury some dog treats and encourage him to only dig in that designated spot.

They are often hearing something that "inspires" them to dig. Might take a look for moles, mice or rats, carpenter ants or termites if it's close to the house.

My wife has a Walker Coonhound that has three legs. He's missing the left front. He doesn't dig at all!

He's also blind, can't hear, no teeth, been fixed and answers to "Lucky". :D

I've heard about putting chicken wire down, also...just below the surface of where the dog digs. The dog's claws will hang on the wire...makes sense.

I've used the chicken wire. It takes a lot of time to put down and recover with a few inches of dirt, but it works for years and years. And, it won't mess up the mower.

For spot treatments, I recently put down the red pepper flakes. It works for about a week, then the pepper goes stale. I bought a huge container from Sams and use it.

But other possibilites - the dog is bored, mad, or there really is something down there that she's after.

Try moth balls-they last a while but will eventually melt with moisture. Dogs hate the smell. Just scatter them on the area where she digs.

Thought that trick was to keep cats away?

They will also keep skunks, snake and other critters out from under your house or feed room.Z

Gather up some dog droppings from your yard, when you fill the hole scatter the droppings throught the top couple inches. You dog wil start to dig at their favorite sopt until they get to the droppings. Have used this many times with great results.

I know a man that could not stop his dogs from running deer. He tied a brick around their neck and let it hang down about ¾ of the way to the ground. When the dogs tried to run the brick beet the you know what out of them. I bet it would work for digging too.
I have put welded wire down to make the floor of the dog pin and they can’t dig through the wire.

Tried the pepper, poop and mothballs. All worked for a while but they lost their strength and she resumed her excavations. Just can't understand why she has to dig right by the front door when she has acres of land she can dig on with no trouble. New idea. Just got home to a newer and larger hole. Prior to filling it up I placed a large mousetrap in the hole. Plan is, when she digs down some 10 inches she will spring the trap and it should scare the begeesus out of her and hopefully break her of digging once and for all. Kinda like a bouncing betty only harmless.

A shock coller and it works every time. Every once in awhile a refresher course mite be needed

Problem is I can't catch her in the act. She is slick. She knows she is doing wrong. She won't dig for days. Then I'll pull in the drive and she will tuck her tail between her legs and drop her head and head to the back of the house. When I see this, I got a hole. The same hole. Right by the front steps and momma is getting upset. And you know how that goes!

Since I put the mouse trap in the hole she hasn't dug any more but its just a matter of time when that trap is going to jump out of the dirt at her. Its gonna be interesting.
