Diesel fuel question

Does anybody know of any reason highway diesel fuel could not be used in an older Massey Ferguson tractor?

Thanks in advance, I'm going out now to work on the farm before it hits 100 today and will check back later.
 
Supposedly the low sulphur stuff can cause problems with seals in the pumps/injectors and doesn;t lubricate as well as the higher sulphur stuff. There is probably an additive available by now that would eliminate those problems.
 
The only difference in on and off highway diesel is the dye in the off road fuel.
At least that was true a few years ago I just assume it is the same now.
 
I don;t know when the EPA came out with the lower sulphur requirements, don;t recall when I first saw low sulphur for the first time on a pump
 
A quart of used motor oil in say, 30 gallons of fuel is what some of the guys with older equipment are doing here. Yes you can use it but you should expect some problems down the road. Nothing to major but enough so that I wouldn't want to have rain clouds forming and a fuel pump on the lam. Although, it would be nice to see some rain clouds forming right now!

We burn BP diesel in the 2007 Kubota but one of the guys who lives and works on the farm swears it fouled up his old Massey but we were out of farm diesel at the time and he was out of fuel. It sounds like he knows what he's talking about.
 
the new fuel is 15ppm or less..older fuel was 500 ppm sulpher or more...prior to that alot higher sulpher. sulpher is the lubricating property of dzl fuel so less isnt really good. esp in the older mech inj pumps and inj.
2 stroke oil has been tested and will rep the lube missing in the ratio of about a qt to 30 gallons. i use 1/2 gal in 90 gal of dzl in my truck. lots of people us e lots of dif things..ash and soot can become an inj problem using alot of old used oils..auto fluids etc. 2 stroke tcw-3 oil from walmart (much as i cannot stand walmart) is a very good oil for this purpose since it does a very low ash deposit after burning.

my cousin is a ford dealer....

I have an old ford 3610.....

he cautioned me a long time back to always use a diesel fuel additive in these older engines as the new forumla diesel fuel will not lubricate like the old formula.

here lately I also use a gas additive to keep small engines from fouling due to ethanol. Not trying to start an ethanol debate but it does have an impact on gaskets and fouling and evaporation. I use a blue additive that for the life of me I cannot recall the name of....seems to really help....especially chain saws and weedeaters etc.

my cousin told me that when they were having a bunch of problems with small engines the factory rep for the engines went around and bought gas from a number of stations and tested for ethanol content and some of them tested as high as 30% ethanol.

I decided that gas treatment was a worthwhile expense. use it in my van frequently but not all the time.
 
startron is good for ethanol...stabil also has an ethanol formula...

but be careful of the dzl additives..most of them are naptha based and do clean but dont do a very good job of lubing..even marvel oil isnt a good as theyd like ya to think.
 
Since the lower sulfur diesel came out, I started using a BG #227D product in my engines, at the suggestion of a few diesel mechanics I know. Good product, yet fairly pricey.
 
i hope ya mean the 2276..it has the lubricity additive..thats the key component...cleaner every tank is useless money spent..lubricity products is not..

And the red dye that MDOC will check for in highway trucks. No dye in farm.
 
Hasn't crossed my mind there was a real difference. I have run about 50 gallons through my 72 Case. Haven't noticed any issues. I found out I could buy taxed diesel in the city I work in cheaper than I can buy farm diesel in the town I live in.
 
walmart super tech..i rest my case..always a gallon in my truck. my tank is almost 100 gal if its empty and ill put in 1/2 gallon..cheap enough i think at about 8 bucks a gallon if i recall...

I use the Walmart super tec. in my Cummins and it purrs, good product.
