About a month ago I weaned (early) a bull calf.

Three days of bawling and walking, and he developed symptoms of pnuemonia. I treated him with Baytril, vitamin B, and Banamine for 8 days. He got better, went back to eating, etc. He's never seemed to be 100% however.. it almost seems like he has allergies, or some sort of head cold. Last night we penned him up and gave him 25 ml of LA200. This morning he was LAME. In his back feet / legs. He seems to almost be dragging them or not picking them up very much.

Did I screw up something? Or is it just a coincident, or another totally unrelated problem? :(

Baytril, which is a fluoroquinolone, causes damage to the cartilage of joints in rapidly growing dogs. They are also banned from use in children for the same reason. Although it is licenced for BRD in cattle, there is the potential for joint damage from the use of this class of antibiotics. He may have permanent lung damage as well, or perhaps it was a virus and the antibiotic could never have worked...and check him for founder with your description of the lameness.

Is that Baytril and vitamin B and banamine - all three for 8 days? or just Baytril and vit B on one schedule, and then banamine for 8 days? What dosage of Baytril did you give?

And...where did you give the LA200? back end, by any chance?

Why LA 200? What made you think of it? If he had pneumonia you know there are better drugs.

If you treated with Baytril every day - yes, you made an error. Baytril can only be used every 72 hours (I think at a maximum of 2 dosages - but I'm not sure on that as we've never had to use it more than once and I honestly don't remember) . Otherwise, joint damage is a side effect according to what I've been told by our vet.

Close. From the label of Baytril...

Single-Dose Therapy: Administer once, a subcutaneous dose of 7.5 - 12.5 mg/kg of body weight (3.4 - 5.7 mL/100 lb).

Multiple-Day Therapy: Administer daily, a subcutaneous dose of 2.5 - 5.0 mg/kg of body weight (1.1 - 2.3 mL/100 lb). Treatment should be repeated at 24-hour intervals for three days. Additional treatments may be given on days 4 and 5 to animals which have shown clinical improvement but not total recovery.

Bull Lady - if you treated that calf with Baytril for 8 consecutive days, then I'm thinking that was a bit much. But - that was a month ago that you treated the calf, right? I'm not even going to make a guess as to whether or not Baytril from a month ago could be linked to today's lameness, and who knows what the chance is of the calf showing up with problems from Baytril - or not - just after a treatment of LA200?

Thanks for the correction, Milkmaid. :) You also have a valid point about the time lapse. I would think that joint damage would take a little time to develope, but a month is longer than I would expect.

No, no.. I'm sorry I misrepresented that. I treated him with the three day dosage of Baytril, TWICE, not once a day for eight days! The Banamine I gave him for three consecutive days.

No.. I never give shots in the hind end.

I called A & M at the start of this problem, and the vet there stated that Baytril was his favorite drug for pnuemonia, but some stains it would not affect.. which I knew. I was quizzing him on how soon after the last injection of Baytril I could switch him to something else, like Nuflor. However, I had another calf at home with the same symptoms that I treated with Nuflor, and it didn't help him either. Soooo.. the vet suggested LA200 as a third choice. He said recently they've had some cases that have responded well to it.

Vicki.. if it was a virus, what would have been the treatment options?

I have also thought of founder, but can't conceive of it being that, as he's been on the same feed for 6-8 weeks now, and the only time he actually went off feed was over a month ago when he was initially sick.

weaned him how early miss bull lady?
i still like a180. everybody wants to keep screwing around with la 200 for respiratory when it ain't worth a hoot for respiratory problems. save the la200 for foot rot and eye problems and use something that will work for brd. i'm not real impressed with baytril either.
