weaned calves about a month ago, gave them their shots blackleg, ibr, pastuerrella . Most of them have knots the size of the tip of your thumb nothing too unusal. Today i noticed that 1 has a knot the size of an orange, developed the last couple days. Bring the chute in tomorrow to check him out should i try to lance it??

Leave it be. Some cattle react more then others to clostridial shots. Some will get a knot the size of an grapefruit and some won;t have even a pimple.

I've found alpha 7 to be problematic, and I think it doesn't help when you give multiple vaccines at once. One thing I've started doing is keeping a soapy bucket by the chute and washing down their necks before injecting. Unless it's just a coincidence, it's helped a lot. Do all/any of you do this before vaccinating?

Seen all different size lumps after injections..marbles to softballs! I make my judgement call on lancing after I get a feel of the lump..if it is a solid hard lump I leave it alone if it's soft and squishy it gets lanced.

I started using alcohol to clean inj. sites a few years back and have seen definate decrease in lumps. I also use new needle for each cow, little more costly but well worth it.

I gave a cow 8 cc of dystosel this summer and she had a huge lump that lasted weeks... same with the one I had to give antibiotics to this spring (she had about 15 lumps and hated me)... they all went away though

I think a sharp needle is a good idea, as bent tips, etc cause a lot more tissue irritation

Well i ran him through the chute, it was kind a squishy so it got lanced, and it started draining immediately. Just never seen or remember on getting that big.. anyway cleaned with peroxide, gave shot of antibiotic, and a tetanis. looks alot better...thanks for everyones input.
