I was watching The Cattle Show and wondered why do people put dewlap tags on cows? I have ssen it before and wondered why? The cows had tags in both ears, whats with this? And how and what do you tag these with?

Many moons ago my old mentor had delap tags on the cows, but they had a code of some sort in them that would turn on the gain feeder while they were being miled. Each cow got a set amount based on her production.

dun

Some of the dairys up north used the dewlap tags.. said they didn't lose them out in the pasture as easily as the ear tags.

More and more around here using them- since the retention rate is many times more then ear tags- but they are more expensive- more labor intensive (and dangerous) to install-- and the guys installing them look like they have spent a day working in the butcher shop when done working a herd thru the chute doing installations....

Thats what I mean, why even bother? It looks ridiculous. I know its not about looks, but if its so hard to install and dangerous why fool with it? Arent tags in both ears and branding enough Identification?

branding is enough identification. but not everyone brands. eartags are pretty much worthless for any length of time. the brisket tags stay in much longer b/c they dont get hung on stuff and pulled out as easily.

Well i guess you are right, ear tags are not very stable, most cows/ calves anythign can rip them out getting hung, etc. And your right about hardly branding.
