Does anyone know of a product out there that detects cattle by GPS???(ex: locating cattle by means of a device inserted into the ear)[/u]

It is out there.

They actually have sensors for arrows now that can be tracked. You shoot a deer, it leaves a device in it, and you can track it. Unbelievable. But, I guess if "hunters" buy these products, there is a market. Surely someone has thought of it for domestic animals. If not, market it and someone will throw away their nickels on it.

Probably much cheaper to buy a bag of cubes each day. But then, you couldn't keep the cows off of you when you went to the pasture.

Dernest thing I ever saw was in Nevada a few years ago. The cowboys were carrying laptop computers, GPS units and satalite phones. When they were checking cows they would find a bunch, get a count and a GPS location and enter it in the puter and send it to headquarters. Course some of those boys living in the line camps might not get into headquarters but a couple of times a month. When I worked on the OROs in AZ we had a radio in camp and were supposed to check in every evening. If we didn't one of the bosses was out looking for us at daylight the next morning. When they found you you'd better be deadZ

the unit on the animal would need a battery (like the neck collar) or a REAL powerful RF reader unit....the ones for use at chute side only read about 3 feet and they are hundreds of dollars....lotsa bucks there guys...

Interesting concept, but why not just saddle your horses, tote your dogs and go on a cowhunt. Why take all the fun out of spread out cattle?

Spoken like a true Cattleman why waste a lot of money on junk, when all you need is a good dog and a horse or mule.

Lotek makes a system for tracking most anything by GPS. Even the wife.

They use collars though.

Simple. Just tell her it's the latest fashion and cost $10,000.00+. Then all her friends will want one. ;-)

They are even working on a shock collar device like is used on dogs that uses GPS that will tell the cow when it has reached the borderline of its pasture area- supposed to replace fencing
