Yes he was, and he had a courageous battle with cancer.

He was in many great films, Easy Rider, Apocalypse Now, Blue Velvet, Giant ..

The first two movies I thought of when I heard the news were "Hoosiers" an "Speed". He had smaller parts in some pretty well known films: "Rebel Without a Cause", "Cool Hand Luke", "Hang 'Em High", "True Grit", and "The Sons of Katie Elder". I had to look that part up.

He was really evil in "Speed". I watch very few movies--not sure how I came to see that one. Believe it or not, I've never seen "Hoosiers" all the way through.
