well now i have been advised to get a degree before starting my operation my question is what degree should i get? im going to be going to Kansas State

If you're already cattle savvy with experience, I'd recommend a basic degree in Business Management. If not, get an Agricultural degree with livestock emphasis and a Minor in Business Management.

Also, consider doing a "Practicum" experience with a good established cattle operation (or) a large animal Vet.

The BIG question when you were a kid, "What are you going to be when you grow up???" I never knew and still don't. I'm nearly 50. I went with the flow of my career and studied fields that fascinated me. Likely there will be things to learn and things that fascinate me the last day of my life.

If you look around at those who have degrees and compare them to those who do not, you will see that on average, educated people are more successful. Is this because they have higher esteem? That is a life long question that everyone has opinions about. We have all met successful people who achieved great feats without education but most of them will tell you it wasn't easy doing what they did. They'll tell you to get an education.

Get a degree is something. For me, it is always easier to study something I am interested in. I grew up with cattle and took animal husbandry for granted. I wished I would have paid more attention to the mentors I had as a kid.
 
I'd be sure to work some business classes in there as well, no matter what you major in.
 
Animal Science/Production, Ag Economics, Ag Communications... You might consider a major in one and then a minor in another...and like others mentioned through in some business classes

I'm with you. Better to go in direction of interest and remember interest also change.

I think the word "mentor" is way overused. But a man I considered to be a mentor , for lack of a formal education, taught himself to read and write. He did not have an easy time of it. He was a very exceptional man.
He reached a high position in the business world and retired to his angus farm.

He made sure his kids got college degrees.

cattle. and one of the cattle ranchers out here with one of the biggest opperations advised. but i didnt talk to him directly so i couldnt ask him what needed to be done

Notime, get a degree in nursing. Sky's the limit on earnings. And you can work anywhere you want.
 
Any degree in a business related field would be advantagous.. even if you decide to do something outside the ranch.

What is your goal for your future? That will help determine what degree to pursue.
 
IMO Get most of your education in something you have a passion for. That being said, make sure you at least have a minor in business. I think business management is the greatest weakness for most ag producers. It is certainly mine. Also, a business degree is an education that is transferrable to almost any occupational detour that life may throw your way. Seems that most of us have encountered unplanned detours over the years. Being well prepared will make those detours less difficult.

Just my 2 cents worth.
 
whatever you do, get a degree. my dad is one of the smartest persons i know, but its really hard for him to find a job now since he never got a degree. never thought he'd need one.
 
From some of the threads I have read here recently, I would say you need an English major and Grammar minor or folks will think you are an uneducated southerner. :shock:

You had better get a degree in something you can make money in. A lot of it. The way land prices are sky-rocketing the only hope you will have of being a rancher is as a hobby or working for the hobbiest, or corperate investor.
 
As you know you don't actually need a degree to ranch or farm, but formal education regarding the business, technology, and regulatroy aspects will help you develop profitable operations. Another route would be to get a degree in something that produces a more reliable and steady paycheck, but ranch on the side. There is nothing wrong with having 2 jobs, one for a decent regular paycheck and one that provides the lifestyle you want. You can take Ag and animal sciences courses as interdisplinary and ConEd courses while pursueing another degree. If you're ok at math I'd recommend a major in an engineering field for the regular paycheck part (since it also has application to ranching). But then that is just my bias.
 
The cows won't care what your diploma has on it as long as they get a little sweet feed along with it.

A good business degree never hurt anyone......
