Deer season opened on Saturday. It was a bust. I only saw 4 does. My son only saw a small band of bighorn sheep. Had a cold wind howling that would blow a hole through a person. I saw zero today and my son saw 2 does. Normally we see 20-30 deer including some small bucks. Oh well I have a freezer full of beef. I wasn't planning on shooting anything smaller than a 25 inch buck anyway. But that quad ride up the hill is kicking my rear this year. I might be getting too old for this stuff. It is about an hour at 10-12 mph. With no shortage of washes and areas of big rock. A person can make it with a 4 wd pickup but it better not be one that you are proud of.

You got cold quick didn't you???

There are deer coming out of your ears around here... they extended hunting season AND you can get either sex ANY DAY... no "doe days" or anything this year. If we don't get the population down, there is going to be a sudden ans severe disease go through and knock the numbers way off... We are just way overwhelmed with deer...

Always believe they know when deer season starts . 😜

We always see a lot of deer in that area but nothing this year. I wonder if there is a cat working that area. That will make the deer vacate an area. Season closes the 14th but my son will be leaving Thursday or Friday. So I won't hunt after he is gone. I need him to pack one out if I do shot one.

They make them things with heat and a/c. Although it takes a very pretty penny to buy one. Just saying.

Archery season started this past week. It’s so hot here that the deer haven’t started running much yet. There’s PLENTY of deer here but there’s a lot of corn still standing. They’re still hanging out in the fields.

Y'all's season is just for 10 days?!!

Yesterday son went about a mile west of where we were hunting. Suddenly lots of deer. Before the 2 of us hunting for 2 days saw a total of 6 does. Where he went he saw 24 does and 2 smaller bucks. Funny how that woks sometimes.

Its all about food source. No matter if its deer, bear, squirrel or whatever. They follow the food.

I don't know what it was. Plenty of feed and water but the area we normally see lots of deer was empty Saturday and Sunday. But that sure changed around today. We never even got to where we were going. We ended up seeing 18 deer and 5 of them were bucks. The son shot a younger 4 point probably 7:00 this morning. Took about an hour to drag it to where we could get a quad. Back home by a little after 10:00. Season closes next Tuesday. I don't know if I will get out again. If I do I am only going to shoot one if it is above the road.

Yes, it will.
With the heater on a frosty morning you might think it is smoother but I will guarantee you those rocks aren't going away. And the wash outs get deeper every year. I drive about 10 mph on the quad. Slow to 6 or 7 in some spots. The pickups which drive up the road don't go that fast. The pickups just creep.

Our gun season does open till mid November. I normally plant around Labor Day but we were super dry till about a week ago . Son and I worked all day yesterday planting food plots . Got close to an inch rain right after we finished. Mixture of oats , rye , clover , rape, and winter peas . Baiting with corn is legal in Alabama with a permit but I guess I’m old school. I still like seeing deer in a green food plot .

Son sent me a picture of me where we got his buck loaded on the quad. You can tell this is part of the old burn from 2016. Lots of feed down in this canyon and up on the other side. This is top of the ridge on a south facing slope. Not as much grows up there. Top of that hill is around 5,200 feet.

SxSs run WAY smoother than atvs. We have bought a rancher, BF 650, and Prairie 300 in the last couple of years. The Rancher is the roughest by far. I hardly ever ride it. Gave it to my son. He's young and doesn't care. The Prairie 300 and BF 650 are pretty simular. The extra weight of the 650 makes it a little smoother.

The extra weight of a cab plus the weight of a sxs makes them soak up bumps that will bruise your kidney on an atv.
