Deer Antler Preservative

My grandpa killed an 8 point buck in central Arkansas back in the early 1950's and I now have the antlers. Is there anything I can get to keep them from chipping and flaking?

As long as you keep them out of the weather and you put some kind of oil on them, they should last. I've used linseed oil and all kinds of floor conditioners. If you do that they should stay in good shape. Taxidermy.net is also a very good site for information like the question.

I just use a good coat of varnish. Seals them so they don;t dry out and detererate.
