I was going through the field today and came upon the little Santa gertudis bull calf that was born last week, i walked up to him and he had the bluest eyes i had ever seen. I have never seen a calf with blue eyes what causes this :?: Both parents dont have blue eyes and i was wondering if this is some gentic fault or just something strange? I have had calves with silver eyes before but there eyes usually slowly turn brown. Does anyone have any blue eyed calves or do i have something special. :?

Can the calf see okay? We've got a few cows, all tracing back to the one original cow, with beautiful pale blue eyes. They are white cows as they are charolais but I wonder if they are albino. They don't sunburn or get cancer. Albino is not an option with yours though!

The calf is very healthy and walks around with no problems and is not blind i have had blind calves before and he's the total opposite i have never seen a calf with blue eyes and i know he's not albino but i be very interested if anyone can help me or tell me what causes this?
:help:

We had a BrahmanXSimm heifer calf that was born with blue eyes....I do not have a picture but they were a dark teal to a dark royal blue color (deep blue like you said).....they turned brown/black (normal) after about 1-2 months if I remeber correctly....

We had one born this spring with blue eyes. He is about 5 months old, and they are still blue. He can see just fine.

There is a genetic reason for this - I can't find the reference right now - that I read about this spring. The eyes may darken with age. I have seen this a lot especially with Simmental-blooded calves, none of them so far have had any problems. If I ever find the "million-dollar name" for this I'll repost.

It could be a few things:
- genetic makeup which may or may not change with time
- lack of oxygen during the birthing process... is he up and active, lively, or a little "slow"
- mineral deficiency (I forget which one)
