We are new to raising cattle and recently lost a steer. He had some yellowish colored mucus coming from his nose for approx. 3 weeks prior. when we found him the vet said that they could not find the cause because 24 hours had passed. any ideas the other heifer that was with him is not sick. Also, do cows require more than the initial immunizations that they receive when they are born?

Well, you need to set up a vaccination program with your veterinarian. If you have questions you need to chat with him / her. ASAP.

You also need to know that this animal might have benefitted from a visit from the big animal doctor prior to dying. Maybe he did get one - but it does not sound like it. In fact spending that money on an annual visit may actually save you enough animals to more than justify the expense.

Finally - no matter how good you treat them - they do die.

Schitzen happens.

So - feed them well, vaccinate them as per your veterinarians suggested protocol, and breed them carefully. Ask lots of questions in advance of anything that could be a train wreck. Trust your gut - 90% of the time it will be bang on.

Regards,

My guess he died from pneumonia, was he wheezing, down couldn't get up at all?
Yes cows do require additional vaccinations as they age.

Im thinking pneumonia as well. I dont understand why the vet said he couldnt tell anything after 24 hours though.

Hit her with a good antibiotic next time you see that.
