Does DE (diatomaceous earth) work as flea control on dogs ? I bought the big guy a flee collar but after reading all of the DO NOTS it went in the garbage as those just cannot be safe if they have 15 million warning labels and you need to wear surgical gloves to put them on the dog.

I have read that DE can be used, has anyone ever tried it and found it effective. My other dogs and the Kit Kat get Advantage but one treatment for the big guy will cost me about 30 dollars a month for him being that he weighs 130 lbs .

Thanks .

HD, I think where you are with the cold just about anything you put on them will work, the DE may clag them up a bit but only a small percentage of the fleas are actually on the dog. I guess your problem would be with the animals inside and you keep the house warm, allowing the fleas to complete their life cycle. I have always been a big fan of the growth inhibitors such as Sentinel (combined heartworm, growth inhibitor, intestinal wormer) combined with product such as Advantage to kill adult fleas, it has worked very well for me in a subtropical environment with indoor dogs. Since moving inland to a temperate environment, I have not had any issue with fleas. These products do not come cheap though Sentinel is not too bad for large dogs (price does not increase in proportion to size of dog) and on line shops make these products cheaper. My daughter can buy these products online cheaper than she can buy them from my wholesaler.

My wife keeps threatening to use de on me and the dogs. Ive found the best control is using a spray on the yards and the rugs. Thats where 90% of the fleas and ticks are. Not on the animals

Thanks guys :)

Sparty isn't allowed in the house ,but I have seen flees on him as he goes everywhere. I am gave the earth a try today. Will let you know how it goes .

Maybe I'm just lucky but I used to have the occasional flea here or there untill 5 years ago when we got chickens. 100% free range. I'm talking no fence, go wherever they want whenever they want chickens. Not a single sign of a flea anywhere ever since the chickens. I think it is because they always clean up the crumbs from the dogs bowls and are unbelievably effective bug catchers, but then again maybe we're just lucky.

HD I've used it on mine as well as broadcasst it all over the lawn. Had an awful infestation of ticks about 10 years ago. Two applications of DE over the lawn about a week apart wiped them out completely. I'd put it on them, in their sleeping area and probably wouldn't hurt to put it in other areas the dogs hang out in. Fleas get into sand etc. and can be hard to get rid of.
