DD calf

I thought it was on here that someone posted a link to a Craig's list add of a calf with extra limbs (developmental duplication). Maybe not, but the calf was listed in OK. Anyway, someone here locally actually bought it and called the news. Very sad day with we have a genetic defect and someone is trying to promote it.

Kris, that may not be the result of DD. DD usually results in a set of limbs originating from the neck or shoulders. Whatever it is, they should do the right thing and have the foot removed. The calf should not be raised as a freak. Calves with DD do fine when the extra limbs are simply clipped off. Shame on the people promoting this. I thought we had moved beyond side-shows.

I saw a mews story a couple of years ago about a guy that has/had only freaks, 5-6 legs, 2 tails, odd placed horns, etc. He was proud as punch that he saved them from being "destroyed" as freaks.

Some folks will do anything for money

The only money spent on that animal should be the 25 cents to kill it and bury it in the manure pile.

That is one genetic diversity I would absolutely refuse to have in the herd should it ever happen here

Oh for memories, A loooong time ago[at least 60-70 years ] a fellow ,somewhere in thes south found a hidden canyon and in it was[supposidly] a herd of tiny herefords and a few small blacks which he was offering for sale at a reasonable price. Made major new's and he was about to cash in big time when the local brand inspector began to smell a rat and made him eventually confess that he had purchassed the cattle through sale barns and other places and there was no secret canyon. At first in those drawf days some people did try to sell them as small feeder cattle,did'nt take long to discover that they had no future in the feedlots. Did no of situations where some of them did wind up in sideshows and circus type things. Always some one ready to promote something if there is a buck to be made. Once while looking at some cattle to buy the owner was very excited about a 2 headed calf that he had and just had to see it so went to his house and he had it in his deepfreeze and was so proud,going to get alot of money for it and turned out it was a very lucky day for me as he did'nt even ask for more money for his feeder cattle,just took our offer as the freak was going to make so much anyway. Oddball animals are a sad thing and sure don't need to be utilized by us . E.B.
