Those cows need a terminal continental sire. You put a big char on em and watch em grow. They are already multibreed- no use keeping replacements out of them.

I'd like to have a bunch bred just about the same as the top heifer. A little ear, black but enough white face in there to keep her sane(usually ). Breed her back angus and you get a great mommy with a solid black calf that has the heterosis to grow like a weed.

Hahaha very funny, you got me. To be fair I wasn't used to their looks, especially with these ears and loose skin so I don't know what to say. Number 2 is ehh....but number 1 and 3 looks good replacements (that if you are planning to keep them for replacements).

This is elementary. Heterosis is maximized at the 3rd cross and diminishes with each resulting cross.

My brother in law keeps saying he wants to run a gert bull over F1 tiger heifers. His main group will be char x tiger stripe. He wants to play with the others thinking replacement heifers. I have cautioned about getting too much in the wood pile. How does the gert x f1 tiger sound to you.

i really like the first heifer if they was mine i would put a black or char bull with them.

Your thinking is right. If I had to retain females out of the f1tiger I would breed them either hereford or brahman. That 3/4 hereford or 3/4 brahman then bred back terminal. Char over the f1 is the best.

Thanks for answer Massey. We have seen those tiger stripe x gert and calves look cool. I do believe they are just a terminal cross .

I have seen a Gert bull over F1 Brahman/Hereford cows for the purpose of replacement females. Mayfair Ranch in Brenham, TX was quite successful in raising F1's and in putting Gert bulls on F1's for replacements. The late Jim Theeck , manager at Mayfair, told me the Gert on the F1 came as close as he could get in being able to reproduce the F1 female. A Gert x F1 Brahman/Hereford works out to be 9/16 British and 7/16 Brahman influenced. He had to brand those animals at weaning with a SX to differentiate them from his F1 Brahman/Herefords as many would look just like the true F1's. The performance on those cattle was close to what the true F1's were.

Heterosis does not suffer from adding another breed to the mix. Consistency suffers, that is another story. :2cents:
