Daydreaming

I have found that during this whole “work from home”, it’s easy to let your mind wander on random topics. Today mine went to building that “dream cow” or “dream herd.” Mine is some mix of SimAngus with Fleck and Red Angus bred back to a Red SIMM bull. I just like red cows even if I have to take a dock at the sale. Have I ever owned a cow of any of those breeds? No, not yet. All of my cows and bulls are black.

What is that dream three way cross for you? Could be breed specific like mine. Could be specific breeding if you are into registered. What is that dream to you and why? Why don’t you have it now?

Give me a Brangus cow and a Hereford bull and I’m happy. Oh but I do have them now. :) Also have some of their off spring. I like the originals are better.

It may not be everyone's dream but we are right in the thick of it.

My husband and I started with commercial herd in 2011. Mixture of Black and Red Angus, Charolais and Herefords. Dabbled with British Whites and rectified that mistake quickly.

Leased bulls in the winter to have fall calves (cheaper for us to feed a bull for a free lease and good for the owner too since he isn't feeding his bull in the winter). We used mainly black Angus bulls but always had to go out in pairs to feed them. Could not trust the bulls. So in 2015 we started doing a little AI work and ended up with 90% heifers. We needed those steers for finishing so we found a local guy who was willing to trade some heifers for steers. Saw our first Murray Grey bull there.

Never heard of them before but my 3 year old son slipped away while we were bullshitting- right into the bull pen.

Never seen a bull so laid back. All 1800 lbs (long yearling) of him went right up to my son and nuzzled him for petting just like a big dog. Talked the owner into leasing him for 3 seasons. Bought some purebred cows along the way and haven't looked back. Have some show cows for local shows (Angus, Charolais and Simmental) otherwise we run registered purebreds now.

I like some things about most breeds. Right now have predominantly Hereford or Angus type cows with Hereford bulls but are changing back over to Angus bulls after this year. In the sense of daydreaming about them I was thinking just yesterday about what an Akoushi bull over Hereford cows would yield. Like Tennessee Tuxedo said I would just like to see a decent market price.

They seem able to buy cheap and sell high regardless.
