Just got back from the State Fair in Dallas. Had a pretty good show overall. 280 something entries in the youth show competing for $30,000. Open show had about 120 entries. Here's some of our results:
Youth:
3 1st places
Reserve Senior Champion Female
Little brother got 1st in his half of the Intermediate showmanship, and then won Overall Intermediate Showman.

Open:
3 1st places
3 2nd Places
Rsv. Sr. Champ Female
Rsv. Grand Champ Female
Rsv. Grand Champ Mature Female
Grand Produce of Dam
Grand Get of Sire

Overall we did pretty good. It was the first time to town for a lot of the animals there...and there were a lot of really good animals there.

Congratulations! When are we going to see some pictures . . .

What is Grand Get of Sire?

I cant promise pictures. I was less than impressed with photographers techniques, so we'll see if any turned out okay.

Get of Sire is a group class with 3 animals out of the same sire. Can have different dams, must be of natural service, can have different owners. Both genders must be represented (i.e. 2 bulls 1 female or 2 females 1 bull). Best group wins.

I agree the photographer was really hit and miss. We showed on two different days. The pictures were better the 1st day. So they cut the judge and banner girls out from day 2 and put them in the picture from day one. Saved us money to have both days combined in one picture. The era of digital photography....got to love it.

Another thing that I have noted as far as the Brahman breed goes with regard to "Get of Sire" the photographs are of a lineup of the rear ends of the animals. Mostly very light ended and not what I would call a good example of their sire. ( I'll give an example when I have time to look back at an old Brahman journal) Here in Australia the only class or group winners to have their rear ends facing the camera are usually steers. Most other groups are side on in a row.

Figured that must be it. I'm a big believer in sire's progeny groups as a promotion for not only your sire but what you are trying to achieve in your breeding program. I think the beef should adopt the dam and daughter classes seen in the dairy ring, as the female lines are important too. Somehow I don't think it will happen though.

It is interesting though, that your get of sire class has to be natural service. What is the reasoning behind that one? I don't think I've ever come across that before. Also, here the animals don't have to be owned by the same exhibitor.

Here in Australia we don't have 'get of sire" we have a sires progeny or a dams progeny group consisting of 3 animals with both sexes represented.

pretty much the same thing here. except in the dams progeny class only 2 offspring are present

I too believe in the group classes. We always enter those classes and lots of times we are the only one in there, but people still see the consistency and production from our animals.

I could be mistaken on the natural service, though. I know in the dams class it must be natural birth, but not sure if it has to be natural service, could be a.i. i believe. I should have put natural birth in the original post. That way it shows what that dam raised, and not that it was just the best ET calf.
