Dairy Queen for Heifers

What a pretty picture Jo ! That field looks very lush , I am sure the girls will do fantastic on it . :tiphat:

Wish I had something like that here for my girls .

Crimson clover?

I planted some as a annual/green manure/grazing crop in a mix. Sure was nice to look at.

I've never had any problem with bloat with this strain of clover. I think the white has more risk but they are already on another field with white so their bellies should be adjusted. I think and hope.

Looks nice Jo!
I am going to knock on wood when I say this, :| but I have tons of white clover in my fields and have not had any bloat with it. However, mine are never pulled off, so I suppose they become acclimated to it as it comes in. Let's hope my luck does not run out.......I do use bloat blocks.

Jo, I just wish I had grass or a pasture that looked like that, soon here through ..... I hope. Like Dave said, the tallest grass is in my yard and too wet to mow. :?

Does giving the hay and the right mineral mix help prevent bloat?

I don't know. When I first started messing with clover I worried about bloat but I've only had one cow with bloat and this came from something else so I don't even think about it anymore. But like Brangusgirl's cows these have been on pasture with plenty of white that has grown with them on it so they should be acclimated. I will put a few bales of hay out for roughage since this field is a lot denser than what they are on now and will probably go right through them. You can't see it but there is also a lot of vetch in the field too so they may plump up like a depressed teenaged girl with access to the Frosty machine at the Dairy Queen.

Jo, you're making us all green.. with envy.. our fields have *just* started to green up in the last couple days, but it'll be a month before there's any sort of grazable growth around..

It looks really nice.. I like vetch as well, though it's a tangled mess to swath!

Nesikep, in a month I'll be wishing for cooler climates. Its been in the 80's here lately and we've had plenty of rain. Summer grazing is off to a good start but the pollen has been a killer this year.

We haven't had much more than a couple drops of rain here.. it would go a long way in greening things up... It's been really dry all month, and we're heading into the dry season now. It's been T shirt weather in the daytime but rather brisk at night... We've had years where we got 100F in may though, and that can continue through august.. but it's a dry heat, and I know when I was at the FritOlay plant by Macon GA it was darned hot.. Actually the last time I was there was just before christmas about 6 years ago and it was in the 80's

Its pretty stuff. Tempts you to take grab a blanket and a bottle of wine and drag the sweet smelling one out in the pasture with you. :lol2: (before you turn the cows on it)
