Hi all, just a question fer ya, we have got a swiss bull calf at auction. we are planning to put him in the frezer at a later date. My question is, do dairy bulls make enough beef to make it worth while? Around here there are mostly dairy cattle that go thru the ring. And beef cattle are far from cheap around here, but you can pick up the dairy bulls at a reasanable price
"cheap" is this what most folks use for there beef needs (IE:feeder calfs) thanks for your help.

I grew up eating holstein meat. When one of the cows would break a leg or whatever, she'd go in the freezer. My brother and aunt raised holstein steers for beef...and they were right tasty. I can't say for sure that a holstein bull would be as good, but I can't see why not. I guess with anything, ya' win a few and ya' lose a few...

We raised holstein steers for freezer beef for a fair number of years. After off the bottle, 100% grain for 10-11 months. A bit spending to feed, but we charged accordingly, and had repeat customers each year.

Folks around here want jerseys for slaughter. I keep a few jersey steers for that reason. Someone stops and asks about them nearly every week. Good tender meat.
