It will be 2 weeks ago tomorrow that the cows got moved out of the fires way on a very hot afternoon. I started checking the calves twice a day. Packing my dart rifle and Draxxin. Only calves I darted were on day 3 and belong to someone else. Then a week ago Sunday they got sorted and we drove the herd about 3 miles to a field B leases. I cut back to checking once a day. None have been sick so I am about the cut back to every other day.
Plenty of green grass and clover for the old girls to munch on. Got to love a $1,225 cow who is now worth close to $2,000 and has a $1,500 steer calf at her side.
The reason for all that green grass. Flood irrigation. This half of the place has well hidden ditches running all over. I find some of them the hard way on the quad.
Another daily joy is the river which divides this place in two. I get to drive the quad across here twice everyday. Big slimy rocks on the bottom makes for a rough ride.
The south side up on the bench on the other side of the river has pretty good dirt. The north side has mostly rock. So it is a lot dryer.
Cows can go to which ever side of the river they want. Along with ditches there is old falling down fence. B's hired guys have been tearing it down and piling when they have time. They got the south side done. They will work on the north side when they get time.
Cows enjoying the peace and quiet of the north side. That is one of those sneaky ditches right in front of me. It is a lot easier to spot them on the north side than it is in the south field.
