Just about everything I read stresses the importance of preganacy checking the cows/heifers and culling the open ones.
The replacements I use run about 1250 and my culls usually bring around 550 am I still money ahead culling these cows?

A lot depends on your feed costs, cost of replacements, and if you're satisfied with cows that run toward infertility. You have to consider the addtiional cost of feeding that cow, even if it's just pasture it has value, till she will/may calve. It's an easir decision iof you have 2 calving seasons, but the dollars will still have to be pencil whipped.

When the average national cost is 400 dollars a head to upkeep a cow. You keep her one year open 550 to sale 400 to upkeep she cost you 950 that year. Versus a producing cow that dropped you a 550 to 600 dollar calf that you made a couple of hundred bucks on.
