Cud droping

One cow in my herd has developed a swelling underneath the lower jaw duringlast week of pregnancy.After calving,the swelling disappeared but she is now not able to swallow the grass.She is chewing and droping out the cud.concentrate feed she is swallowing normally. She became very weakand boney now. Any sugestion on what the problem might be and the line of treatment? :?:

First thing that comes to my mind would be a possible tooth/teeth problem, as msscamp posted.

What dosecan be tried.Please advise.

I personally would not administer any drugs until I knew what I was dealing with - I'm not a big believer in trial and error when it comes to treating illnesses/problems. The only other thing I can thing of, since her teeth appear to be ok, is some sort of blockage that is preventing her from swallowing solid food. That would also account for the the weight loss previously mentioned. If this were my animal, I would be contacting my vet to find out what the problem is and get it corrected.

I had a cow with a similar problem a few weeks ago. The vet found she'd punctured her tongue, which made it hard for her to swallow. She was also spitting out her cud. I did catch it right away, so what little weight she lost she's regained now.

I would definately check out her mouth! If you can't do it yourself, take her to a vet.

The old timers used to talk about making the cow a new cud, and for the life of me I can't remember how they made it.
But the research dept. is investigating.

Many moons ago before the advent of the rumen stimulation products, we'ld steal the cud from one animal and force feed it to another. Very hard on fingers and taok a lot of patience

Saw a vet at the dairy walk thru the barn to find a cow that was chewing her cud. He just reached in and grabbed a handful.
