If you want to produce a really market acceptable calf, use either the Gert or Beefmaster cow and breed to any beef breed that does not have Bos indicus breeding.

Santa Gertrudis cows will be more uniform than the Beefmasters. BM can be all colors, and some more Brahma looking than others. A homozygous for black and polled Angus, SimAngus, or Simmental bull will give you the most marketable calves. If you really like red, though, I have seen some Santa Gertrudis x Red Charolais that were nice! Charolais really puts the growth on calves.
